POWER MOVES: M.I.A Parts Ways With Roc Nation

M.I.A. closed out 2013 with an announcement via twitter that her management deal with Jay Z at Roc Nation has come to an end. The 38 year-old “Bad Girl” Sri Lankan signed with the label last spring after experiencing creative differences with her previous one, Interscope, over album Matangi. Since then the album has been released under positive reviews and rated by TIME Magazine as the 10th Best Album of The Year. Six months ago Jay Z’s Roc Nation label started operating under Universal Music Group, which also owns Interscope. By the next month differences head surfaced again, this time regarding her much anticipated documentary and resulted in the resignation of its director Steve Loverige. Filming has long since resumed, and Loverige, who has known M.I.A since their days together at a London art school, will cull from hundreds of hours of privately shot footage that M.I.A. and her friends at non-profit documentary support organization BRITDOC have been filming. Its goal is to present an intimate look at the geneses of M.I.A.’s music, art and attitude and I’m hoping it will bring us some insight about her next step.(RollingStone)
